This post is all about my review of the Function of Beauty Wavy Hair line.
So I have been seeing influencers promoting the living crap out of the Function of Beauty Haircare line. Almost every haircare routine I find on Youtube or Instagram includes mention of these products.
So when I noticed Target now carries it, I wanted to pick them up and do a review of them myself to see what all the hype is about.
I should preface with: I have thick, wavy to curly hair that is prone to frizz and dry ends. The products I picked up were the shampoo, conditioner, and deep conditioning mask for wavy hair.
To be sure I gave it a fair chance, I tested them out for three hair wash sessions before writing this review.
I reviewed the shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask separately below. I then include some final thoughts on the line as a whole at the end of this post as well as some alternative products!
Read on for my Function of Beauty Wavy Hair review.
Function of Beauty Wavy Hair: Shampoo
SIZE: 11 FL OZ (325 ML)
PRICE: $9.99
REVIEW: The Function of Beauty Wavy Hair Shampoo is packaged in a simple minimalist looking bottle (in my favorite color so brownie points!)
It claims to be naturally derived with the benefit of strengthening your hair and increasing elasticity with fermented rice water.
Judging by first impressions of packaging alone, I love the look of the bottle. It’s always nice when a product is aesthetically a good addition to your shower lineup.
As for scent, it has a pleasant, clean and peachy smell to it that I did enjoy.
My initial thoughts upon using the shampoo is that it is thicker and goopier feeling than any shampoo I have ever felt. It has a thick gel-like consistency that is somewhat sticky.
This shampoo emulsifies pretty easily and worked a good lather into my hair.
It did seem to get my hair super clean almost as a clarifying shampoo does. However, for my regular use shampoo, I would expect it to be a bit more hydrating to accommodate my wavy frizz prone hair.
Overall the shampoo was okay, but nothing special.
PROS: Clean smell, thick consistency that emulsifies, free of sulfates & parabens
CONS: Clarifying feel, not hydrating enough
RATING: 5/10
Function of Beauty Wavy Hair: Conditioner
SIZE: 11 FL OZ (325 ML)
PRICE: $9.99
REVIEW: The packaging for the corresponding conditioner is packaged in the same simplistic lavender bottle but in a little lighter shade.
It has the same peach smell as the shampoo and it claims to have argon oil in it for glossiness.
But when it comes to my initial thoughts upon use, the Function of Beauty Wavy Hair Conditioner let me down.
For my thick wavy hair, I used what felt like half the bottle and still didn’t feel like it was hydrating my hair. If I’m not able to start finger combing through my hair easily with conditioner in, I know it’s not the conditioner for me.
I kept having to add more and I just felt that overall it didn’t make my hair feel as hydrated as I would prefer.
I also noticed that propylene glycol was included in the ingredients list. Propylene glycol is super irritating to me personally and a common allergen for many people.
PROS: Clean fruity smell, cute packaging; vegan, 94% naturally derived ingredients
CONS: Contains propylene glycol, not moisturizing enough
RATING: 5/10
Function of Beauty Wavy Hair Mask
SIZE: 6.5 FL OZ (192 mL)
PRICE: $9.99
REVIEW: The Function of Beauty Wavy Hair Mask contains vegan squalene and claims to provide lasting conditioning and protection from breakage. Given this, I had high hopes going into my first use. This is because the regular conditioner did not leave my hair feeling nearly moisturized enough. I was definitely hoping that once I used the mask it would add back some needed hydration.
The mask has the same peachy smell as the shampoo and conditioner, and the texture is buttery but could be thicker in my opinion.
Unfortunately as I was smoothing it over my hair I realized it was a similar situation to the regular conditioner.
I had to keep adding more to be able to finger comb it through my hair. It was thicker than the regular conditioner though so I could tell it was working better. However, not even close to what I would expect for a renowned haircare line.
The ingredients did include propylene glycol as well which I was not thrilled about.
PROS: buttery feel, peachy clean smell
CONS: have to use a lot of product, did not hydrate hair enough
RATING: 6/10
Final Thoughts
How your hair feels right after it is washed is a tell-tale sign of how well the products worked for you.
If my hair is left feeling stripped or my comb won’t easily glide through, I consider that a fail.
So I was disappointed to find that fresh out of the shower my hair was not easy to comb through and felt tangly and dry.
Now, I will say that I did not add any of the beauty shots. I am assuming this would make a bit of a difference.
However, I feel like it’s kind of a hassle to buy a shampoo and conditioner and then have to pay additional money for add ins and also have to mix them in yourself.
To play devil’s advocate, the customizable option could be a perk for some.
So, maybe I’m just lazy in that sense, but I prefer a product to come pre-formulated for me and ready to use.
My final verdict: The function of Beauty Wavy Hair line is not worth the hype and I will not be repurchasing.
If you would like to try it for yourself you can purchase at Target or through the Function of Beauty website!
Alternative Options
If you’ve been searching for a super hydrating shampoo and conditioner for wavy hair in a comparable price range, I would definitely recommend both the L’Oreal EverPure Glossing or Ever Pure Moisture lines.
They both leave my hair feeling super soft and moisturized.
Plus, I don’t even feel the need to use a deep conditioner or hair mask because the regular conditioner is moisturizing enough.
Not to mention, the rosemary scent is ahh-mazing!

How to Style Thick Wavy Hair: Easy Weekly Styling Routine

i had the exact same experience you described. my hair is longish, thick, and wavy/curly. i tried the shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask (all for wavy hair). i DID add three shots to each (curl, shine, color protect). my hair felt dry, tangled, and course after rinsing out each product. on top of all THAT, my hair wasn’t nearly spirally and bouncy after letting it air dry (my usual routine. i will be going back to bumble and bumble invisible oil shampoo/conditioner. a little pricey but it works like a dream and you need WAY less product.

Exactly! I’m glad I’m not the only one! It seems like everyone is raving about how great it is but it definitely didn’t live up to the hype for me either.
