Specific Style Ideas for Finding Your Style
If you don’t know where to start at all, here are some ideas of different styles that might resonate with you.
Once you find one that you think suits you, simply do a search on Pinterest for “goth vamp style” and start pinning different outfit ideas to your board.
Some examples of specific styles are:
- “Clean girl” minimalist
- Gothic/vamp
- Sexy bombshell
- Business casual chic
- Comfy athleisure
- Bold and colorful
- Floral and feminine
- Vintage grunge
When you read out each of those styles, I’m sure a specific image pops into your mind.
That image is also a depiction of that “style.”
How to Find Your Style
1. Find Your Style by Getting Inspired
There are plenty of different ways to find style inspiration, but one of the best ways I have found is to create an inspiration-style Pinterest Board.
As you are building your board, think about people whose style you are most drawn to and who you are most inspired by.
This could be celebrities, influencers, friends, etc.
What about their style aligns with you own? Is there a common style theme you are noticing?
Start exploring these different styles by searching on Pinterest (you can even use the styles I listed in the above section) and pinning the ones that inspire or love the look of.
Eventually, you will have a whole board of outfit inspiration the next time you are drawing a blank of what to wear to dinner.
2. Get Your Colors Done
A super fun experience is to have a professional color analysis done to find out which colors compliment you at a place like House of Colour.
Another, option (Bonus points for it being FREE!) is to go to the website colorwise.me.
You simply upload a picture in natural light and then based on your skin tone, eye color, and hair color, it provides you with a color palette which most compliments you.
Once you know your color palette, you can use this information to do a closet evaluation, and to start including these type of color choices in your daily outfit choices, and constructing your style.
3. Be Honest With Yourself When Finding Your Style
As you are on your journey to finding your style, you need to be honest with yourself.
Start by asking yourself some questions like:
- “What do I feel most comfortable in?”
- “What do I feel most confident in?”
- “What was I wearing when people have given me compliments?”
- “What types of activities does my day to day lifestyle include?”
The answers to these questions can be super helpful in navigating which style choices might be best for you.
For example, it might not be fitting for someone who works from home to convert their wardrobe to professional suits and ties type of wardrobe.
If you don’t like restricting pieces and prioritize being conservative, it would be foolish to convert your style to super tight Bodycon dresses and busty jumpsuits with plunging necklines.
4. Create Outfit Templates That Match Your Style
You might also call it finding outfit formulas, combos, or templates.
Once you find something that you feel confident in that just works for you, use this as a template and start to duplicate it.
Some examples of outfit templates could include:
- high waisted pants with loose band tees tucked in and sneakers
- your favorite pair of jeans with a bodysuit
- a loose fitting sundress with strappy sandals
5. Make Note of What You Love
If you haven’t done so already, start making note of patterns and colors you gravitate towards when shopping or even in every day life that catches your eye.
This really comes down to getting in tune with yourself and trusting your instincts and finding items or styles you are naturally drawn to.
Once you have found something (whether it be a purse, a pair of shoes, or even a blouse) you truly love, this is an opportunity to build your style up around these signature pieces.
6. Be Cognizant of Your Body Shape When Finding Your Style
Last but not least, at the very least, be aware of your body shape and do some research on what types of outfits compliment your shape the best.
This also means being real with yourself and assessing your current body shape. Not the shape you want to be after your 12 week diet.
Not to say that you should let your size dictate what you wear, but if you can find a way to amplify your best features, and steer clear of some that aren’t so flattering for you, why not give it a try?
7. Use the Three Word Method
According to Allison Bernstein, the creator of the three word styling method, by “choosing three adjectives to describe your current style and/or the style that you aspire to have” you are able to better find your own personal style.
In short, this method states you should come up with:
- A baseline word – i.e.: How would you describe the style of your most worn items?
- An aspirational word – i.e.: When you think of your dream style, what word comes to mind?
- An emotional word – i.e.: How do you want your style to make you feel?
Once you’ve identified and clarified your style with these 3 words, the idea is it will make a difference on your outfits and help you stay connected to your core style as well as to yourself.
For instance, mine came out to: Soft, Neutral, Confident.
Some other examples might be:
- Dark, Sexy, Confident
- Comfortable, Feminine, Cute
- Patterned, Bold, Edgy
