This post is all about how to have better mental health. More specifically, things to do weekly to make you feel like you have your sh*t together.
It’s no secret life can be stressful. And, if you are anything like me, you easily become overwhelmed and stuck in your own head.
In addition to this, I also struggle with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I talk more about how I manage my anxiety in this post. So once I start feeling like I need a breather, it can be hard for me to find my balance again.
For that reason, I knew I needed to start doing some things differently. Or, at the very least, come up with some things to do to help me find my equilibrium when I fall into a rut.
Regardless of if you struggle with mental health or not, you are guaranteed to take something helpful away from this article. These are things everyone could do weekly to just feel better overall.
If you’re up for the challenge, try to incorporate these to-do’s into your weekly routine. I promise it won’t be long before you start to feel more organized, happy, and in touch with your the best version of yourself.
Weekly Self Care musts:
1. Make your bed everyday when you wake up.
Starting your day off on the right foot starts with making your bed. You would be surprised how something so simple can make such a huge difference in your mindset for the rest of the day.
Accomplishing something, no matter how small it may seem, within the first few minutes of your day by default sets you up for success.
I learned from the book “Atomic Habits” by James Clear (literally such a good book and I highly recommend) that one good habit early in the day leads to a chain of good habits to follow.
Much like the domino effect, one good habit leads to another. Before you know it, your brain automatically associates one activity with another. Why not make that activity something productive?
2. Write things down.
It is so helpful for someone with a fast, anxious mind to write things down.
My thoughts bounce around so fast that I’m doing good to remember what I had for breakfast most days. Some examples of things to write down could be: your to do list for the day, things you are thankful for, or even things that are stressing you out.
Something about turning intangible thoughts in your head into tangible words on paper makes them feel so much more manageable.
3. Take feel-good vitamins/supplements.
Supplements are another way to enhance your mental health. I keep it simple and stick with this Hair Skin and Nails Multivitamin because it checks all the boxes for what I want in a supplement.
Remembering to take a daily supplement can be hard but you can set a reminder on your phone if it helps.
Or try clustering pill-taking with another activity such as drinking your coffee or making breakfast. This way, you automatically take your vitamins.
4. Don’t go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink.
For as long as I remember, there has always been an unspoken rule in my house that you don’t go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink. And don’t get me wrong some nights if I’m extra tired I will let it slide.
But I would say 90% of the time I try to never let dirty dishes sit in the sink overnight.
For one it is kind of gross and can make your kitchen stink. And secondly, it isn’t a great way to start your day to wake up to things you put off from the day before starting you in the face.
A great way to keep up on dishes is to rinse your plate and put it in the dishwasher immediately after you finish eating. This way they don’t pile up and doing dishes is far less time consuming at the end of the day.
5. Clean out your purse.
I try to clean out my purse every Sunday night to get myself organized for the week.
You don’t have to do it as often as I do but you would be surprised how quickly your purse can get filled with random items. It’s actually pretty impressive how many random items/receipts/makeup, etc I manage to throw into my purse each day.
I always feel so much better too once I go through and get rid of any expired coupons, receipts and clean out the junk that has piled up in there.
6. Pamper yourself.
A great way to press the reset button is by getting in some self TLC and pampering yourself.
For example, you could do this by booking yourself an appointment for a pedicure, massage, or facial. Even when I treat myself to a DIY facial at home, I immediately feel so rejuvenated and refreshed.
7. Do one thing you love daily.
Ever since I started working from home, my days can start to blur together. They can be pretty boring too and I start to feel like I do the same thing day in and day out. One way to combat any bad feelings that come with this is to do something you love daily.
This can be something as simple as leaving the house 15 minutes early to get a coffee on your way to work (or if you’re like me and work from home this means leaving the house for a quick coffee run).
Some other examples may include taking time to read a chapter of a good book, journaling, going for a jog, gardening, or preparing a meal you pinned from Pinterest.
You could even learn a new skill like playing an instrument or learning a foreign language. Once you start making progress you will feel proud of yourself for all the practice you put in.
8. Start a gratitude journal.
What better way to live a happier life than to remind yourself daily all the good things about it. Pick up one of these on Amazon and challenge yourself to jotting down one thing you are thankful for daily.
If you’re a morning person add it in to your morning routine or if you’re a night owl do it right before you turn off the light.
9. Manifest your future.
If you dream It you achieve it.
Manifestation is a huge trending topic right now and many people live and swear by it.
If you are a beginner to manifesting it is basically just diving deep into your dreams and mapping every element of them out in precise detail. You can visually manifest by starting a Pinterest Board of things you associate with goals you would like to achieve.
10. Set small attainable daily goals and stick with them.
For no other reason than that it will build your trust and confidence in yourself. What better way to boost your mental health than being proud of yourself for sticking to your goals.
11. Clean your car.
It can be extremely satisfying to give your car a nice deep clean. Especially if you are someone who spends time daily commuting your car is a space you occupy daily.
If you bring your dog with you in the car your car will no doubt collect dirt and dust way quicker too. Therefore, keeping it clean gives you something to take pride in and it’s something you easily have control over.
I make sure my care doesn’t accumulate clutter by throwing out trash every time I get out. I also wipe my dash down weekly to prevent dust and keep a nice smelling air freshener.
12. Tap in to your sexuality.
One of the best ways to have better mental health and practice self-love is by tapping in to your erotic/sexual side.
There’s many ways to do this but some of the more subtle tips that often get overlooked are:
- wearing lingerie for no special occasion
- trying something new with your hair
- doing a sultry makeup look
Basically, do what makes you feel hot! This will obviously differ greatly from person to person but the goal is to boost your self esteem.
13. Develop a good relationship with food.
A good ratio to aim when it comes to healthy eating is 75/25.
This means to eat healthy 75 percent of the time or most days of the week and treat yourself 25 percent of the time.
Being all or nothing with your diet can feel like you are fighting an upwards battle. The minute you slip or cheat you feel defeated and think you have to start all over again.
Avoid this cycle by giving yourself some leeway and practice a healthy balance.
14. Get enough sleep/take a nap.
You will never feel your best self if you are not getting enough sleep.
Commit to getting 8-9 hours of sleep every night and feel the difference it makes both mentally and physically!
15. Buy yourself flowers.
Who says you have to wait for for someone to buy you flowers? I love the way a vase of flowers adds life and vibrancy to my home.
Next time you go to the grocery store and you see the bouquets when you walk in, grab the one that pops out at you. Take it home put it in your favorite vase and let it brighten your mood each time you catch a glimpse.
In other words, buy your own damn self some flowers, sis!
16. Spend more time outdoors.
Going outside and feeling the sun (or rain) on your skin is a tried and true way to have better mental health. Nature has healing powers plain and simple.
17. Spread kindness.
Being a kind person goes a long way.
Give a genuine compliment to someone, smile at/acknowledge a stranger, pay it forward by covering someone’s order behind you in the drive through, or volunteer for a cause you are passionate about.
Not only will you be spreading kindness but a beneficial effect is that you will in turn feel good about the type of person you are choosing to be.
18. Invest in yourself/future.
Of course, you can quite literally start investing your money but other ways to invest in yourself could be things like:
- Invest in your mental health by finding a therapist
- Invest in your health by purchasing a gym membership
- Invest in yourself by fixing a physical insecurity through surgery/procedure
19. Spirituality/Religion.
Get in touch with your spiritual side by educating yourself and practicing.
You can start by taking yoga classes, or reading up on shakras and mediation. If you are religious, start praying more and going to church when you can. Believing in a higher power has encouraged healing in many people.
