This post is all about how to not smell with natural deodorant.
I have wanted to convert to natural deodorant for a while now. And don’t get me wrong, I have done my share of dabbling in the natural deodorant world. I’ve trying a handful of different brands over the years, but I always end up going back to regular. Full disclosure: this is for one main reason. To put it quite frankly, it’s cause I always end up smelling. Natural deodorants just never seemed to do the job for me.
Fast forward to this year. I just turned 30 and the older I get, the more I have started to take my health seriously. In doing so, a big part of that has been trying to be more mindful about what I’m putting into my body and onto my body. As it turns out, the deodorant I’ve been clogging up my armpits with for a couple decades now, is full of some pretty nasty ingredients.
So after some (a lot) of experimenting, I am here to share with you how I was finally able to convert to natural deodorant, without the smell. It’s safe to say I’ve cracked the code to wearing a natural deodorant and not smelling while doing so. Spoiler alert: it’s a big part of it has been finding a brand of natural deodorant that works actually works!
Read on for how to not smell with natural deodorant.
1. Change Your Hair Removal Method
I’m going to start this out with something you might not expect; hair removal.
If you are a shaver, like I was for many years, I’m here to tell you there’s way better hair removal methods that will not only leave your arm pits smooth and stubble free, but make your armpits smell better as well. I don’t know if this is scientifically proven, but it’s something I’ve noticed personally for myself.
Once I started epilating my armpits, the hair grew back much thinner as well as a different texture. In turn, for whatever reason, my armpits did not seem to get as smelly. My theory is that shaving leaves a layer of stubble that odor-causing bacteria are able to cling to. Regardless of the reason, my advise is to ditch the razor entirely for your underarms and either wax or epilate.
I bought this $25 epilator 3 years ago and it still works like a charm. I outline my epilating routine here if you’re interested in learning how I do it. The best part is I only have to worry about removing the hair under my arms once every week or two!
2. Have a Thorough Underarm Cleansing Routine
You always need to follow a deep, thorough cleansing process for your underarms in order to avoid the stinch; but this is especially true if you are using a natural deodorant. The most effective way to get a deep underarm cleanse is to use an antibacterial cleanser on your underarms.
My favorite is the Antibacterial Bar Soap by Dove because it’s not too harsh while still giving you extra squeaky cleaning properties. Don’t sleep on bar soap you guys!
After you have cleansed, it’s crucial you follow that up with an exfoliant. Don’t skip this step because it’s so stinkin’ important – no pun intended! You can use a washcloth, loofah, or even your hands. Just make sure you are taking the time to exfoliate your underarms during every shower session in order to scrub away any residual deodorant under your arms. A lot of times, this leftover deodorant is what harbors odor-causing bacteria.
These are my favorite underarm exfoliating products.
If you are prone to stinky armpits and want to go the extra mile to ensure no odor will peak through, use this cleanser by PanOxyl under your arm that contains benzoyl peroxide. It will banish any and all remaining odor causing bacteria.
Before applying your deodorant, the last step is to make sure your armpits are patted dry with a towel in order for your deodorant to slide on smoothly.
3. Wear Natural Deodorant That Actually Works
The best way to pull off the almost impossible task of wearing natural deodorant is to wear one that actually works. That’s right, there’s numerous natural deodorants on the shelves that claim to provide lasting coverage; but the truth is, within a few hours of using these, you can start smelling B.O.
The best, and only, natural deodorant I have found to work is the one by Native. One of the great things about this brand is that they have a great range of scents to choose from. A couple of my personal favorites are Cucumber Mint and Ginger Lemonade Cupcake.
Native is the only brand of natural deodorant that I feel truly has the deodorizing power capable of beating out any musky smells. It keeps me smelling fresh for over 24 hours without re-application. I mean, even a friend with hyperhydrosis says it works amazing for her as well!
4. Do a Weekly Armpit Detox to Not Smell With Natural Deodorant
A main takeaway here is that the best way to keep your armpits smelling fresh with natural deodorant is by keeping them clean. A great way to ensure your pits are as clean as can be is by incorporating a weekly armpit detox.
I’ve found the best one is this clay mask.
Clay naturally pulls impurities from your pores and has great cleansing powers. All you do about a tablespoon of the powder with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar until it becomes a paste and slather it on your armpits. Once it has dried on for about 15-20 minutes rinse it off. Simple as that.
Another simple way to detox your armpits is by wiping pure lemon juice from a soaked cotton pad onto your armpits and letting them air dry for as long as possible. During your next Self-Care Sunday, let your armpits breathe for a few hours with nothing but the lemon juice. Lemon juice is a great natural acidic cleaner that removes impurities and kills odor causing bacteria.
