This post is all about how to stop hair from going frizzy in humidity.
I don’t know about you, but my hair and humid weather do not get along.
While I love a good tropical vacation, I’m from the Midwest. This means I know more than anyone how much of an impact the weather has on the appearance of my hair. Basically, all of my best hair days are during fall, winter, and spring. Once the humid heat of summer hits, it takes an incredible amount of effort to keep my hair looking good.
Another contributing factor for me is that I happen to have super thick wavy-curly hair. While I’ve come to love my hair, it is definitely a hair type that is just naturally prone to frizz. Preventing thick wavy hair from frizzing is even more difficult.
By the way, If you want to see my easy weekly hair styling routine for my thick frizzy hair, check out this post.
That’s why I’ve spent a ton of time researching (and executing) the best ways to keep my hair looking good during times of heat and humidity.
If you find yourself struggling like I have, read on for how to stop hair from going frizzy in the humidity!
Over-indulge in oils to stop hair from going frizzy in the humidity.
This is an absolute must for curbing frizz in tropical humid weather. Hair oil works to coat the hair shaft to prevent hair from expanding (frizz). When I went on my honeymoon to Jamaica, my hair oil was my best friend. I coated my locks in oil and this managed to keep my hair looking healthy and my waves defined without the frizz. There are so many great hair oils to choose from, but one of the more affordable ones (only $5!) I recommend is the OGX Renewing Argon Oil of Morocco Penetrating Hair Oil Treatment.
Seal the hair cuticle with cold water.
Try adding a blast of cold water to your hair at the end of your shower. According to Byrdie.com, rinsing your conditioner out with cold water seals the cuticle and prevents moisture loss.
Avoid using heat to stop hair from going frizzy in humidity.
One of the most effective things you can do to prevent frizz in hot, humid environments is to avoid using heat on your hair. This means rocking your natural hair texture for worse or for better (trust me it’s better!)
When you apply heat, as soon as you walk outside, your hair is bombarded with moisture in the air and it will cause your curls to fall or your straightened hair to revert back to waves or curls. Basically, it takes away all the precious time and effort you put into heat styling your hair.
So, do yourself a favor and look into trying some of the alternatives to heat styling that I mention later in this post.
If you absolutely must use heat, use the right products to stop hair from going frizzy in humidity.
I have heard amazing things about the Dream Coat Supernatural Spray by Color Wow! It claims to actively prevent your hair from going frizzy in the heat.
I haven’t personally tried it but I plan to do a review on it here soon and will report back. It claims to be activated by heat and the effects can last through 3 to 4 shampoos.
This would be a great addition to your travel bag if you are going somewhere tropical and want to still be able to style your hair without worrying about inevitable frizz.
Wear your hair up and slicked back.
My go-to hair style to prevent frizz in humid conditions is a slicked back bun. Just take some hair gel and comb your hair back into a sleek low (or high, depending on your preference) bun. Spray it down with some anti-humidity hair spray and you’re good to go!
Wear your hair in braids.
Rocking braids is a great way to maintain your hair in a humid environment while also preventing frizz. What’s even better is it doubles as a styling agent. Try wearing your hair in braids all day on the beach and then before dinner, unravel the braids and finger comb with hair oil for sleek waves.
Don’t bleach your hair.
Keeping your hair healthy in the months leading up to a trip to tropical weather can work wonders when it comes to preventing frizz. Or, if you permanently live in a humid area, it might be worth it to work on improving the health of your hair. If you are damaging your hair with bleach, the hair damage is way more noticeable in hot humid environments. Try swearing off bleach for at least a year and reap the benefits of healthy frizz free hair!
Invest in good conditioners to keep hair from going frizzy in humidity.
When hair is smooth and lacking frizz, the cuticle is laying flat. Conditioning and moisturizing your hair will aid in hydrating your hair and thus smoothing the cuticle. To ensure ultimate hydration, invest in a good quality hair conditioner for the shower as well as a leave in conditioner for post-shower. Remember, when hair lacks moisture, it absorbs it from its surroundings and gives it a poofy appearance.
Accessorize with hats and hair scarves.
A super fun way to disguise frizz in humidity is to try out accessorizing with cute hats and hair scarves. You can even wrap your hair in a head wrap completely if you don’t want to worry about your hair showing at all!
Avoid getting hair wet in saltwater and chlorine.
Submerging your hair in saltwater or chlorine is never a good idea. Especially if you’re trying to keep your hair in it’s most manageable condition – which is key for good-looking hair in humid climates.
Obviously, don’t let this prevent you from experiencing water activities where it’s unavoidable to prevent getting your hair wet. I would just take precaution to not submerge your head in the water just for the heck of it. Salt and chlorine both have drying properties which can change the hair’s texture and ultimately make detangling difficult.
Your hair needs SPF too!
Guard against heat and SPF damage by using a heat protective spray with SPF.
Your skin isn’t the only thing that can be damaged by strong UV rays of the sun. Furthermore, preventing hair damage is key to having hair that looks great naturally in humid weather.
I absolutely love this SPF 30 Scalp & Hair Mist Organic Sunscreen by Coola. It’s vegan/cruelty free and infused with Minoi and Gotu Kale Extract to promote healthy hair in the hottest of climates.
