This post is all about how to use an epilator to get silky smooth, stubble-free skin.
My quest to getting smooth armpits has been a long, bumpy one.
(No pun intended.)
I am a dark haired, THICK haired, hairy girl.
By this I mean, I have always had more body (& head) hair than my friends and growing up I remember being super insecure about it. If you know the struggle of having thick hair, don’t forget to check out my post on how to style thick wavy hair.
Anyways – I even remember being teased at a young age by some boys who said I am a girl and I’m not supposed to have more leg hair than them.. ha!!!
So even at an early age I was made to feel that I needed to get rid of my hair. Hence my quest to find the best methods of hair removal.
Why epilating is great
When it came to my underarms – I have always hated the fact that I would grow stubble so quickly, and that I couldn’t shave every day because it would give me horrible razor rash.
The first route I took to was waxing and it was such a messy fail for me. Not to mention you have to wait for the re-growth to be a half inch long in order to touch up or wax again.
I also looked into laser therapy but that was just too expensive and such a long process.
Then, when I nearly accepted the fact that I would never have nice smooth armpits, a miraculous thing happened. I stumbled upon a handy dandy little contraption known as the epilator.
Of course, before I could reap the benefits of epilating, I first had to learn how to use an epilator on armpits.
What is an epilator?
An epilator is essentially a handheld tool that contains a bunch of little tweezers that rotate quickly and pluck your hairs out as you glide it over your skin like a razor.
It seemed to be a pretty simple idea and there was no messy cleanup or set up so I figured why not give it a go!?
Needless to say, it went painfully well – and I’m going to give you some insight on how to perfect the epilate your first time around.
*Before setting out on this life changing mission, be sure the hair is long enough to grab onto with a tweezer. So for me, it was about 3 days post-shave but that could vary depending how quickly you grow hair.*
How to use an epilator on armpits
Step 1:
About 30 minutes before you start the pluck fest, do yourself a favor and pop a pain reliever. I drank a glass of wine but I’m not sure I should openly recommend that. Anyways, get something in your system to numb the pain for what’s about to go down.
Step 2:
After you’ve drugged yourself up, (just kidding, kind of) – hop in the shower. Make sure you take a hot shower and make it long enough to allow the hair follicles to soften. While you’re at it, exfoliate.
This is going to ensure you have a clean fresh canvas with no leftover deodorant residue and also helps to prevent ingrown hairs.
Step 3:
Pat your skin dry. You want to make sure the skin and hair is dry so that the mini tweezers are able to grab on to the hair. I’ve seen some people use a bit of talcum powder but I just make sure mine are dried off.
Step 4:
Take a deep breath and just go for it.
The hardest part is the VERY first minute or so. It’s painful. Like 9.5/10 very painful the first time. But unlike waxing, it is super thorough and worth it.
Start by concentrating on a small area with the epilator straight even with your skin.
Once you’ve ran a few passes over the skin, the sensation starts to be less and less painful. Your first session is always the most painful. The second hurts. But by the third or fourth I’m not sure if it’s because my hair was growing in so much thinner or that I had become immune to the pain, but it really wasn’t bad at all!
Avoid using any products on your armpits for at least a few hours after your session, because they will most likely be sensitive and red for a bit.
How often do you have to epilate?
The ABSOLUTE best part about epilating is that I only have to do it about once a week to maintain.
Even after a week, the hair that I do grow back under my arms is so fine and soft! I can confidently say I will never go back to shaving my underarms with a razor.
Which one should you use?
I actually tried a higher end one by Braun initially and ended up taking it back and exchanging it for this.
It’s cheaper and it works amazing. I just clean it out after each use with the brush included.
Final thoughts on how to use an epilator

If you have tried epilating already, what was your experience like and do you have any additional tips?
