This post is all about how to have a minimalist studio apartment and incorporate minimalism into a small space.
Do you have a studio apartment or are you living in a small space and want to start incorporating minimalism to maximize your square footage?
If so, you are on the right track.
There is no better way to maximize your living quarters (and clear your mind at the same time) than transitioning your space into a minimalist sanctuary.
Go through your things and get rid of anything you don’t use daily or haven’t used in the last 6 months to a year tops.
PIN FOR LATER:
Read on for all about minimalist studio apartment ideas.
1. Choose a multi-use coffee table that can be used as a side table/foot ottoman/extra storage
2. Use a rug to separate “rooms”
3. Use ceiling curtains as room dividers to separate rooms
4. Keep wall paint light and neutral
5. Stick to a color pallet for decor
Keep things cohesive by sticking to a color palette composed of mostly neutral colors.
Some good minimalist color combos include:
- White, black, green, and dark brown
- Grey, light brown, green, and white
- Burnt orange, grey, black, and beige
6. Choose large pieces of furniture but have less furniture
Much like quality over quantity, same concept here. Opt for large, quality items that will last, over a bunch of small pieces of furniture.
This is another hack for making your studio apartment look way more elevated and classy, especially if you invest in a nice large cloud couch (there’s plenty of affordable dupes on the market).
So don’t shy away from bold, large furniture pieces, even in a studio apartment.
7. Utilize shelving
Utliize shelving on bare walls to add interest or use shelving as a room divider to give room like feel and split up areas.
8. Opt for clear acrylic stands and tables
Nothing screams minimalist like these super trendy and cute acrylic tables, stands, and coffee tables! An added plus is that they are light weight and easy to move around for cleaning and multi-uses.
9. Hang curtains high
I say this in every decor post, but the way curtain placement can completely transform a space is actually insane.
As a rule of thumb, always hang curtains only an inch or two below the ceiling. This creates the illusion of height (aka extra space) in an already small space such as a studio apartment.
10. Stick with the basics in a studio apartment
It might be tempting to have end tables and bar carts and console tables. But the truth of it is, in a small space, this will completely take away from the minimalist element and could come off as cluttered.
As a rule of thumb, all you need furniture wise for a studio apartment is:

- 1 Bed Frame
- 1 Small Bed Side Table
- 1 Large Lamp
- 1 Dresser
- 1 Couch
- 1 Rug
- 1 Coffee Table
- 1 Small Eating Table with 2 chairs OR just 2 bar stools if you have an island with counter space
- 1 TV Stand OR TV mount for wall (even better and takes up less space – win!)
- 1 Desk if you work from home
- 1 Chair
& that’s really it! Depending on your needs you can add in a small bench in the entry way for convenience or a shoe rack.
11. Utilize under the bed as extra storage space if needed
Keep things clear and out of sight/mind with under the bed storage.
12. Add a large mirror
Mirrors are notorious for adding the illusion of additional space to an area. Don’t skimp on a mirror and add a huge body length or taller mirror.
13. Canopy bed for division and room-like feel to your sleeping space
14. Use furniture with multiple uses
Much like the tip regarding a coffee table, you can also put this concept to use for things such as entryway benches that double as a shoe rack or console table.
Especially if your studio apartment is lacking storage space, a multi purpose decor piece is a great way to sneak in some extra storage space!
15. Avoid having more than a few vases, candles, trays, stands, books, and other decor objects
16. Get Creative with Light Fixtures
Be strategic about lighting, since light fixtures as well as overall lighting can completely transform a room.
To keep things minimal, opt for one large beautiful standing lamp over a bunch of small lamps.
Even better though, if you have the ability, replace light fixtures with large bold fixtures that match your decor style.
17. Get creative with furniture layouts to utilize space in the best way.
When I first moved into my small studio apartment and was deciding how to decorate it minimally, part of my process included moving furniture around multiple different times and ways. I’m a visual person and have to see things in place.
You can also use your phone to draw up markups of possible furniture positioning.
18. Utilize a Corner Nook For a Bedroom
Hang a rounded ceiling curtain track as a room divider and wah-la!
Final Thoughts on Minimalist Studio Apartment Ideas
The key takeaway here with minimalism, and I will die on this hill is that you DO NOT NEED more organizational tools or more space, you need LESS STUFF!
Once you transition to this frame of mind, you will start looking into all the ways you can downsize what you have, instead of spending money on larger apartments or living quarters with more storage space or buying a bunch of organizational tools.
